Offical Wine Analysis Service Website

What is wine quality analysis service?

The Wine Quality Analysis Service, launched by CESFAS at NMSU, is designed to help New Mexico's wineries and vineyards make more informed decisions on grape harvesting and winemaking using data-driven, scientific methods. In collaboration with the New Mexico Wine Association, we are committed to supporting the growth and success of New Mexico's wine industry.

Why wine quality analysis?

  • Wine quality analysis is essential for ensuring consistent quality and compliance with regulatory standards.
  • It is conducted at various stages of winemaking, starting from grape harvest to final bottling.
  • Grape harvest timing is critical to achieve the ideal balance of sugar, acidity, and tannins.
  • Analytical testing provides scientific data to guide decisions and optimize production processes.
  • Federal regulations, such as the limit of 0.5 ppm copper residue in finished wine, require precise measurement to ensure compliance.
  • Combining analytical data with sensory evaluation helps winemakers anticipate issues, refine processes, and produce superior wines that meet consumer. expectations.

Sampling and Shipping Instructions

  • Provide 50-60 mL of sample in sample container/tubes for analysis.
  • Ensure that the lids of the sample tubes are tight.
  • To maintain sample integrity, minimize the headspace (air) in the sample container/tubes.
  • Samples should be frozen before shipment.
  • Do not overfill the tube or container; leave some space for the sample to expand when frozen.
  • Label your samples with the winery name and sample ID as indicated on the analysis request submittal form. Use distinct sample IDs for each sample if sending multiple samples.
  • Please include the sample submittal form along with your samples.
  • Ship your frozen samples with 3-4 ice packs or some dry ice in a thermal insulated envelope or Styrofoam box. Alternatively, you can use any method that keeps your samples frozen until they arrive at our lab. For best results, use FedEx or UPS's next-day delivery service to maintain sample integrity.
  • Please make sure to address the samples to 'Wine Analysis Service' and include a label that says 'Keep Refrigerated' upon arrival in the package
